Dawn Kitz, a South Orangetown Central School District board member, resigned effective Wednesday, Sept. 25, saying she held herself responsible and "I apologized" to offended community members.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Kitz, who joined the board earlier this year, complained during the meeting and on Facebook, saying she had faced an "extremely challenging situation" since joining the board.

"Some members refused to speak to me or even acknowledge my presence," Kitz said. "The board members have a responsibility to work with each other to serve the students and teachers. I truly don’t understand how a board can function effectively under such circumstances."

She went on to complain about bullying and her treatment on the board.

Complaints from the community began when Kitz used a laughing emoji on a post that joked about the lack of "aim" following the attempt on Trump's life. It also said: "If you're going to do it, then do it already!"

During the meeting, Kitz said her use of the emoji was "misconstrued."

Public members attending the meeting said they were disappointed with Kitz's apology.
